About
Katherine Blakeslee is a watercolor artist based in Washington DC. Her work is in private collections throughout the United States and in the United Kingdom.
A forgotten picture, painted as a child and saved by my father re-ignited my interest in painting many years later. Images and experiences from my travels across the world during a career in international development inspire much of my work. The sometimes invisible, always magical, line between the sky and land or sea, and the mysterious ways in which light changes everything continually fascinate me. Watercolor captures these mysteries. The challenge of the medium lies in shared creativity between the artist and the paint, with neither in complete control, resulting at its best in an image which is greater than the sum of its parts.
My current work is based on the constant change we all experience in our interactions with nature and the world around us. Some are mysterious scenes of the sea or the land from around the world. Immovable mountains may be juxtaposed with hundreds of starlings twisting together in an airborne dance, combining movement and solidity against a luminous sky.
